The CARACAL team removed this massive Anchieta's cobra (Naja anchietae) from the airport in Kasane this morning. A shipping container is not a great place to grapple with a cobra - let alone one this big. These snakes - once regarded as a subspecies of the Egyptian Cobra - are found in parts of Namibia, Angola, Botswana and Zambia. They feed on a wide array of prey, from amphibians to small rodents, bird eggs, and even other snakes. Their venom is neurotoxic (causes neurological damage), although cardiotoxic (disrupts electrophysiology of the heart and other smooth muscle tissue) aspects have also been noted. This magnificent specimen will, as usual, be released at a safe distance from human habitation later today.
